About Me
I was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and grew up in the Dunbar neighbourhood, adjacent to Pacific Spirit Park. I've always had a love of the outdoors, and feel most comfortable in forests. After completing my undergraduate and masters degrees in UBC's Faculty of Forestry, I pursued a Ph.D. at the University of Idaho under Dr. Andrew Robinson. I accepted my first academic position in Michigan, in 2003, where my spouse and I raised our family, and I learned about the beauty and diversity of the mixed broadleaved and conifer forests of the Upper Midwest. I had an opportunity to return to Canada in 2021, and I am presently holding the Endowed Chair in Forest Growth & Yield at the University of Alberta.

Here I am in 2016 when I visited the Biltmore Estate at Asheville, which is known as the birthplace of American forestry. Nearby, you can visit the Cradle of Forestry in America Heritage Site. I'm proud to wear my Silver Ring, which is given to graduates of Canadian forestry programs by the Canadian Institute of Forestry and is a symbol of commitment to sound forest stewardship.
